There’s nothing like the open road to cure a
little madness. Unless, of course, we’re talking
March Madness. In this case, you’ll need a
firmly planted seat, a TV big enough to catch
all the action, some enjoyable eats and maybe
even a place where everybody knows your name.
At Whabah Motor City Bar and Grill, you can have
the best of both worlds; the sights and sounds
of the open road and an enjoyable meal with
those you call family and friends.
Motor City is a relaxed, no frills environment
with a warehouse-style openness and concrete
floors. The frills come where it counts,
definitely in the food, as well as in those half
dozen or so huge flat screen TVs placed
strategically throughout the “ginormous” room.
The best of both worlds is also reflected in the
Motor City menus. Breakfast is served from 5
a.m. to 2 p.m. daily. “The other menu,” as our
wait staff mysteriously described it, can be
ordered from all day.
That “other menu” includes 11 appetizers (great
for a little basketball viewing) from wings to
quesadillas, nachos to cheese fries, and even
artichoke spinach dip.
I took a few dining companions who were all in
the mood for burgers - so they ordered from “the
other menu.” The menu itself is also low key,
and while Motor City doesn’t brag about it,
these beef patties are not your everyday burger
patties. They are thick, full of flavor and
moist, whether you order them rare or well done.
This is a burger definitely made your way with
bacon, or cheese, grilled onions or mushrooms or
whatever you like, served between two thick,
crispy slices of buttered Texas toast! Even the
pickle chips are larger than life, bigger than a
half dollar and almost as thick as the meat
patty. Yum (we almost ordered fried pickles
because we had a child with us who loved them -
after seeing the pickles, I suggest you do so).
I ordered from the breakfast menu. Not to
exclude you basketball fans, but the breakfast
menu is all about baseball with opening day,
home run and all-star specials, and even a
rookie plate. What a great way to commemorate
the upcoming Bowling Green Hot Rods’ maiden
season with all your favorites: omelets, eggs
cooked your way, bacon, ham, sausage steak,
country fries, hash browns, and, of course,
biscuits and gravy.
I noticed that Motor City also offered homemade
sausage from local meat processors Kirby and
Poe, so I decided to try it with my over-easy
eggs and hash browns. It really was
one-of-a-kind - a mix of the meat taste, plus
smoky seasonings and a hint of spicy flavor.
Wahbah’s Web site touts its breakfast as the
number one in town, and I’d have to agree I was
served quality ingredients cooked with
experience and know-how.
One important notation - smoking is allowed in
part of the restaurant and it is an open floor
plan without dividers.
I enjoyed my visit to the Motor City Bar and
Grill. It was flavorful, friendly and a nice
welcome home after a much needed solo road trip
- the roar of the engine reminding me of all the
places I have to go and the tires gripping
payment, moving me down the road. Much luck to
the Hot Rods as they do the same.
